Maria Cassatt’s la sorella lydia fu una grande parte della sua vita . Nessuno dei due decide di sposarsi , hanno vissuto insieme in francia fino al Lydia’s morte in 1882 . Mentre era viva , mary ha usato lydia come modella in molti dei suoi dipinti , la tazza di tè è una di queste . Questo dipinto è più un genere dipinto che un ritratto , in quanto rappresenta un'usanza sociale che cassatt ha rivisitato più volte nei suoi dipinti : la presa di una tazza di tè . Dipinto in modo impressionistico , molti critici d'arte consideravano il dipinto incompiuto , a causa del fatto che cassatt ha lasciato non verniciate piccole porzioni periferiche della tela .
